Why Enterprise AI Follows a Different Curve

At the Swiss AI Summit 2025, Dr. Dorian Selz addressed a growing tension in the AI space: while consumer AI adoption has exploded, enterprise AI adoption remains slow - and for good reason. Enterprise environments demand security, compliance, accuracy, and predictable ROI, all of which are largely invisible in consumer-facing demos.

Dorian framed AI’s evolution through the lens of the hype cycle. History shows that real productivity gains do not emerge at the hype peak, but later, when organizations confront complexity and build discipline. In enterprise AI, this phase has only just begun.

The Real Barriers to Scaling AI

Drawing from work with regulated institutions, Dorian outlined the core blockers: security risks, legacy system integration, unclear business cases, accuracy challenges at scale, and lack of real usage. Many AI pilots perform well on small datasets but collapse when deployed across millions of documents with strict permission models.

He highlighted that security must be embedded deep inside AI systems - not only at the application layer. Chunk-level permission control, auditability, and experience operating AI systems over time are essential, especially for banks and regulators.

Orchestration and Engineering Discipline Win

A central takeaway was that enterprise AI is fundamentally an engineering and orchestration challenge. Organizations must combine probabilistic systems like LLMs with deterministic systems such as search, rules, and workflows. Without orchestration, AI solutions remain fragile, expensive, and unscalable.

Dorian closed by emphasizing that AI is not magic - it is an optimization problem. The companies that win the next decade will be those that build stable systems, control costs, and enforce enterprise-wide standards from the C-suite down.
